The 2024 Election and the AI Misinformation Challenge
The 2024 US presidential election tested our ability to handle AI-generated misinformation, and the results are sobering
The election is over, and regardless of where you stand politically, the role of AI in this election cycle deserves serious examination. As someone who builds AI systems for a living, I feel a responsibility to think honestly about the technology's impact on democratic processes.
This is not a partisan post. This is a technology post about a technology problem that affects everyone.
What We Saw
The 2024 election cycle was the first US presidential election where generative AI tools were widely available and easily accessible. The implications played out exactly as many of us feared:
AI-generated images and video. Deepfake videos of candidates saying things they never said. Fabricated images of events that never happened. AI-generated audio clips mimicking candidates' voices. The production quality of this content was high enough to fool casual observers.
Synthetic text at scale. AI-generated social media posts, comments, and articles designed to influence opinion, amplify division, or simply drown out genuine discourse. The volume of synthetic content was unprecedented.
Targeted misinformation. AI tools enabled the creation of personalized misinformation at scale. Different messages for different demographics, different regions, different concerns. The ability to generate custom content for every audience segment made traditional fact-checking nearly impossible.
Erosion of trust. Perhaps most damaging: even when real content existed, AI's capabilities gave people reason to doubt anything they saw. "That could be a deepfake" became a blanket defense against inconvenient truths. The existence of AI-generated content undermined trust in all content.
The Technical Dimension
As an AI builder, I understand how these tools work, and that understanding makes the problem feel more urgent, not less.
Generating a convincing deepfake video required significant expertise and compute a year ago. Today, it requires a laptop and a few hours. The democratization of AI creation tools is generally positive, but it also democratizes the ability to create sophisticated disinformation.
The detection side is losing the arms race. For every detection tool that can identify AI-generated content, there is a generation improvement that makes the content harder to detect. Watermarking helps for content from major providers, but open source models can generate unmarked content freely.
Content provenance standards (C2PA and similar) are promising but not yet widely deployed. Even when deployed, they only authenticate content that opts into the system. They cannot authenticate content that was created outside the provenance chain.
The Builder's Dilemma
I spend my days building AI tools that make software engineers more productive. I believe in the technology's potential to improve lives and amplify human capability. But I cannot ignore that the same underlying technology, generative AI, is being used to undermine democratic processes.
This creates a genuine dilemma.
Do you stop building because the technology can be misused? No. Every transformative technology, from the printing press to the internet, has been used for both good and harm. Stopping progress is not the answer and is not possible anyway.
Do you ignore the harms because the benefits are real? Also no. Willful ignorance is not a responsible position for someone who understands the technology deeply.
The responsible path is harder: build thoughtfully, advocate for guardrails, contribute to detection and provenance efforts, and be honest about what the technology can and cannot do.
What the AI Industry Should Do
The AI industry bears some responsibility here, and we should act on it:
Invest in detection. The major AI labs should dedicate meaningful resources to detection research, not as a PR exercise but as genuine engineering investment. Detection tools should be free and widely available.
Deploy provenance standards. Every AI generation tool should embed provenance metadata in its output. This should be a default, not an option. The C2PA standard exists; it needs adoption.
Fund media literacy. The most effective defense against AI misinformation is a population that understands what AI can do and approaches content with appropriate skepticism. AI companies have the resources and the obligation to fund media literacy programs.
Support regulation with expertise. Regulation is coming. The AI industry can either help write thoughtful, technically informed regulation or fight it and get uninformed regulation instead. The first option is clearly better.
Be transparent about capabilities. Stop pretending that AI-generated content is easily distinguishable from real content. It is not, and saying otherwise gives people false confidence.
The Personal Dimension
I voted. I engaged with the democratic process. And throughout the campaign, I found myself applying my technical knowledge to evaluate content in ways that most people cannot.
When I saw a suspicious video, I knew what artifacts to look for. When I encountered a social media account with certain patterns, I could estimate the probability that it was AI-generated. When a piece of content felt designed to provoke an emotional reaction, I could analyze its structure.
Most people do not have this background. They should not need it. The burden of evaluating content authenticity should not fall on individual citizens. It should be addressed at the infrastructure level through provenance, detection, and platform responsibility.
The Parallel to My Work
There is a direct parallel between the AI misinformation problem and the work I do on agent systems.
In both cases, the core challenge is verification. How do you know the output is trustworthy?
In my agent systems, I address this through quality gates, verification loops, and multi-agent review. An agent's output is not trusted by default; it is verified through structured processes.
The same approach applies to AI-generated content in the public sphere. Content should not be trusted by default. Verification infrastructure (provenance chains, detection tools, source authentication) needs to be built and deployed at scale.
Looking Forward
The 2024 election was a preview. The technology will get better. The content will become more convincing. The scale will increase.
The question is whether our defenses will keep pace. I am cautiously pessimistic in the near term but optimistic in the longer term. The tools for content provenance, detection, and authentication are being built. They are just not deployed widely enough yet.
As AI builders, we have a responsibility that extends beyond our products. The technology we create shapes the information environment that everyone lives in. We need to build with that awareness and act accordingly.
This is not someone else's problem to solve. It is ours.
